Reading Nana is not a good start to a day. Neither would it be a good bedtime read. Nana... is too depressing.
Similar to teenage girl comics, the characters in Nana are gorgeous, charismatic and talented. Unlike the teenage girl comics, the prince drives himself (literary) to destruction and the princess is too stubborn, too emotional and by far, the most unladylike female lead I've come across.
And I like her immensely.
There are no fairytales in the world of Nana, just pretty bubbles which burst as soon as they are formed, dreams which collapse despite the hopeful, silent pleas of the characters and the readers.
But Nana does have its light-hearted, heart-warming parts, parts which instill hope in the readers, telling them that no matter how hopeless situations can be, they should never stop working hard towards a better future, never give up on their dreams and never stop hoping.
The author, Yazawa Ai, is a superb storyteller. Nana is not her most imaginative work but it is the most realistic and touches the most hearts. Visual-wise, the characters are all pleasant to the eyes, each an artwork on its own. It helps that the author has a good sense of fashion.
Reading Nana is a joy, and also a heart-wrenching experience. Do it at your own risk but once started, you will love it as much as I do.

is the series over? We were almost the same age as Nana initially but our age gap is slowly widening but Nana is still a teenager! Argh.
Haha.. Nana is born in 1981.We'll always be younger than her.Yay! The series is not over yet. The books are coming out really slowly, especially recently. The author was sick earlier this year and took a long leave from work. Months long. Don't know if she has resume to work or not.
